Booking

Can you book a Korean salon without a Korean phone number?

Yes. Since 4 June 2026 Naver verifies foreign passports instead of a Korean phone number, so you can use NAVER Booking; Kakao's certificate still needs a Korean line and a Korean bank account, and shops that book only by DM still expect Korean. Without Naver, millio takes the booking with the phone number and email you already have.

Short answer: yes — and the reason it is finally yes has a date on it. On 4 June 2026 Naver began verifying foreign passports, so the booking system many Korean salons run on stopped asking for a Korean phone number. What still asks is Kakao, and any shop that takes bookings by DM.

Below is what changed, what did not, and what to carry instead — the state of things as of August 2026, with every date left in so you can see how old each piece is.

  1. 01Since 4 June 2026, Naver verifies your passport instead of a Korean phone numberNaver opened passport verification on 4 June 2026. If you hold a passport issued outside Korea, you can finish identity verification on your own phone — no Korean line — and then use NAVER Booking, NAVER Order, and payment inside Naver Map. That is the piece that matters for beauty: Naver Booking is where many Korean hair, nail and skin shops keep their calendar.
  2. 02The verification wall was measured, not imagined — it is Korea's most-cited digital complaintYanolja Research read 7,260 travel posts on Reddit — three years of them — and published the findings in April 2026. About 11% of the Korea posts carried a complaint, against about 7% for Japan. Digital was Korea's largest complaint area at 27.8%, ahead of tourist information at 16.4%. Ranked by specific item, the single most-mentioned complaint was sign-up and identity verification at 13.1%, ahead of payment methods (11.5%) and app-service errors (10.4%). The most common digital complaint foreign visitors make about Korea is not the language barrier but the sign-up screen.
  3. 03Korea's tourism agency asked for passport verification in March 2024; it arrived in mid-2026The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization surveyed 1,232 visitors between 31 October and 6 December 2023, with 32 in-depth interviews on top. 91.7% had used a Korean app during the trip, and the report — published on 5 March 2024 — named the demand for a Korean phone number as a barrier, proposing passports, email and overseas credit cards as alternatives. The fix landed about two years and three months later — and it came from a company, not a rule, which is why it covers Naver's services and nothing else.
  4. 04Install Naver Map first: it was the majority's navigation app, and it reads in your languageIn that 2023 survey 56.2% used Naver Map for directions against 33.9% for Google Maps, and 48.3% used Papago for translation against 23.0% for Google Translate. Naver Map has carried English, Japanese and Chinese since 2018, and the number of people running it in a language other than Korean hit a record in April 2026, 16.4% above September 2025. One Naver account holds the verification, the map and the booking, so setting it up once opens all three.
  5. 05KakaoTalk signs in on your own number, but Kakao Certificate needs a Korean line and a Korean bank accountKakao's own help pages are blunt about it: Kakao Certificate requires a mobile number registered to you with a Korean carrier and a bank account in your name at a Korean bank. Nationality is not the barrier — a foreign resident holding both can use it; a short-term visitor can obtain neither. The messenger itself works on an overseas number, so you can chat with a shop today: messaging and identity verification are two separate doors. Kakao reported 49.63 million domestic monthly users in Q2 2026 — the 55.35 million global figure includes them — which is why a Korean shop replies there first.
  6. 06Kakao Hair Shop no longer exists — the app English guides still name is Mamedene, and it is Korean-onlyOperator Wyatt handed its platform business to Glitty, a company set up in June 2024 under Fork Holdings, and on 30 September 2024 the service was renamed Mamedene; the address moved from hairshop.kakao.com to mamedene.com. On the Korean App Store the app — listed as Mamedene – AI hair simulation and salon booking — lists Korean as its only supported language, and it books nails, lashes, waxing and skin as well as hair. Any guide still telling you to download Kakao Hair Shop is two years out of date.
  7. 071330 is the travel helpline: tourist information and interpretation in several languagesThe Korea Tourism Organization runs the 1330 travel helpline: dial 1330 inside Korea or +82-2-1330 from abroad, at your own call cost — the online voice call is free while you are on Wi-Fi. There is also the 1330 messenger, which needs no download, and an online chat. Among the services it lists is tourist interpretation — travel information in multiple languages — and it takes travel complaints as well.
  8. 08Do the passport verification before you fly, not standing in the salon doorwayIt is a one-time setup, and the calm place to do it is on hotel or home Wi-Fi with the passport in your hand — not at a counter with a stylist waiting. Naver has said it intends to widen the feature to more login methods, more languages and more services, but has published no date, so plan around what works as of August 2026. And none of this reaches the shops that take bookings only by phone or by Instagram DM in Korean.
