Jjimjilbang in Seoul

Korean bathhouses and spas in and around Seoul, and how to fit one around your salon appointments.

Plan around your salon appointments

Many salons advise keeping heat and steam away right after lash extensions, and skipping saunas for a day after waxing, so it’s easier to fit your jjimjilbang visit in before those appointments than after. Check your salon’s own guidance.

Myeongdong, Euljiro & Dongdaemun· 1

  1. Sparex Dongdaemun (Goodmorning City)

A 24-hour jjimjilbang bathhouse where friends sweat, eat and nap.

A 24-hour jjimjilbang on the third basement level of the Goodmorning City mall, near exit 14 of Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station. It has a hanok-style wooden interior, dry and wet saunas, sleeping areas, a food court and luggage storage.

    Why go
In Korea a jjimjilbang is an everyday place where friends and families sweat, eat and nap for hours. Many foreign guests come here, so it is easy to follow along on a first visit, and it slots neatly between Dongdaemun shopping and a late night.
    Good to know
You change into the jjimjil clothes you are given for the shared areas, while the bath and shower zones are gender-separated and fully nude. Tattoo rules are set by each facility, not by law, so ask before you go and check the venue's own notice for hours and closures.

Seongsu· 1

  1. Gangbyeon Spa Land

A family jjimjilbang where Koreans eat, play, rest and nap all day.

A large jjimjilbang that opened in 1988 and fills the first and second basement levels of a building near Gangbyeon Station in Gwangjin-gu. It has a pine-wood-fired sweat kiln, charcoal, salt and red-clay rooms, hot and cold baths, saunas, a restaurant and a game arcade.

    Why go
It shows the neighborhood version of the jjimjilbang day, where eating, games, rest and sleep all happen under one roof. It is described as family-oriented, so you see how ordinary Korean visitors spend the time.
    Good to know
The official tourism listing shows it open 24 hours every day, so it suits a late-night or early-morning slot. The wet area is gender-separated and nude, and tattoo admission is up to each facility, so ask first.

Gocheok & Sillim· 1

  1. Venue G Aqua 24

A big jjimjilbang in a home neighborhood where families spend the day.

A large sauna and jjimjilbang complex on the second basement level of a building near Gayang Station in Gangseo-gu. It has themed rooms such as clay, salt and ice rooms, saunas, a fitness area, a book cafe and a kids' zone.

    Why go
It is a big jjimjilbang in a residential part of western Seoul rather than a sightseeing facility, so you see an ordinary jjimjilbang day. The book cafe and children's areas make family use easy to observe.
    Good to know
Seoul's official tourism listing gives the third Wednesday of each month as a closing day, with an earlier close the night before, so check the date. It is about 770 m from exit 8 of Gayang Station on Line 9.
