A hanbok gets you into Gyeongbokgung without a ticket, foreign visitors included. The ticket is ₩3,000, so the rental costs more than it saves. Rent it for the day, not the discount.

The scheme dates from 2013, and more than 2 million people used it in 2025, the Heritage Service told Yonhap. Prices are from millio's three hanbok shops in Jongno, the district the palace sits in. Palace rules are from the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center's own pages, read on 9 October 2026.

  1. 01Wear hanbok and Gyeongbokgung is free, foreign visitors includedThe Royal Palaces and Tombs Center (the Center), part of the Korea Heritage Service, lists hanbok wearers among its free-entry visitors, and its Q&A says nationality does not matter. The same rule covers Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung, Jongmyo and the Joseon royal tombs. You save ₩3,000 at Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, ₩1,000 at Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung and Jongmyo (adult tickets). Foreign visitors aged 18 and under or 65 and over already enter free.
  2. 02What counts: a jeogori and a skirt or trousersThe guideline wants two pieces: a jeogori (the short jacket) with a fastening collar, plus a skirt or trousers. Traditional and everyday hanbok both qualify, and so does hanbok made for the other gender. A one-piece dress, a coat worn alone, or hanbok mixed with jeans or a T-shirt does not. It also asks for dress that suits the palace and rules out excessive exposure.

  3. 03Renting? Check the set is two piecesYonhap reported in May 2026 that fusion designs are common at rental shops around the palaces, and that the Center knows. The test is the form, not the label: a jeogori plus a skirt passes, a dress-style set does not. If you want a royal, court-official, cheollik or dopo robe set, ask whether a jeogori and trousers come underneath, since a robe on its own does not count.
  4. 04What it costs: ₩10,000 to ₩55,000, and the set matters more than the hoursPer person, one set, from millio's menus (checked 9 October 2026). Gowoonsol Hanbok (고운솔한복) lists a standard traditional set at ₩10,000 for 1.5 hours, ₩15,000 for 3.5 hours and ₩30,000 all day. Themed sets add ₩5,000, and a top tier of royal, official, cheollik, dopo, premium and gradient sets adds ₩25,000. Byeolgungteo Hanbok Gyeongbokgung asks ₩20,000 for 2 hours and ₩25,000 for 4. Haewadal Hanbok asks ₩15,000 for 2 hours, ₩20,000 for 4 and ₩35,000 all day, plus a 2-hour “1+1” at ₩28,000. That is three shops, not the whole street.
  5. 05Pick the length by the palace's last entryGyeongbokgung is open 09:00–18:00 from March to May and September to October (last entry 17:00), until 18:30 from June to August (last entry 17:30), and 09:00–17:00 from November to February (last entry 16:00). The menus sell hours, not clock times, so ask when your clock starts and when the set must be back, then count back from last entry. Longer is cheap: at all three shops the longer block costs ₩5,000 more, and all-day adds ₩15,000 on top where it is listed.
  6. 06Tuesday? Wear it at another palaceGyeongbokgung is closed on Tuesdays; Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung and Deoksugung close on Mondays. If the rest day falls on a public holiday the palace opens, and the next non-holiday day becomes the rest day. Deoksugung stays open until 21:00 (last entry 20:00). Changdeokgung's rear-garden tour is ticketed separately, and hanbok is not on the free list for it.
  7. 07Weather and closures can change the dayThe visiting rules let a palace pause or limit visits in heavy rain or snow, heat waves and fine dust, and require it to post the reason and dates where visitors can see them. Photo spots close too: from 2 September to 31 October 2026 the stone platform in front of Geunjeongjeon is off limits. Check the Center's notices on the day.
  8. 08Before you pay, ask the shop three thingsWhat comes with the set beyond the set itself (shoes, hair styling or accessories), when it must be back, and whether it is two pieces. millio reserves the shop for you, and any deposit is passed straight to the shop. Deposits differ: ₩0 at Gowoonsol, ₩5,000 at Byeolgungteo, and at Haewadal the full fee is the deposit (checked 9 October 2026).
